surveys

something interesting came up on stage48, an english community-run forum.

HMV had a survey of questions asked about akb48 members ranging from ‘which is your favorite team’ to ‘which member would you want to be’.  4,001 fans were surveyed, and 23% of them were females.  some results were typical, while others were surprising.  thanks to the forum member who took their time to translate it.

whether they confirmed your suspicions or surprised you, it’s always interesting to see.  the last three questions showed some fascinating differences between the male and female fans.  while girls wanted to be shinoda mariko she doesn’t rate as high as a choice for best friend, while males chose oshima yuko for both.
girls obviously took into account that mariko is the tallest, and has the looks of a supermodel while the guys probably chose who they could relate to more, who happened to be the tomboyish and athletic yuko.  watanabe mayu was the obvious choice as the ideal younger sister for both parties, but it was striking by how large a margin she won that first place.
it’s safe to assume that akb48’s popularity explosion is in fact due to their singles ‘River’ and ‘Sakura no Shiori’, seeing how almost 40% of the fans surveyed had only been fans for less than half a year, and how only a small percentage of them have attended the akb theater and gone to ‘meet the fans’ sessions.
we’ll see if any of these new fans stick with it, or if they’ll herd onto the ‘next big thing’ the first chance they get.  more likely the latter, but who wants them right?
